PATCO Ticket Machine Tricks

A few days ago I got one of those Freedom passes for the train. I think it will be convenient. I had a lot of change, so I sorted out all the quarters and put $20 worth in a tupperware container. Quarters in hand, I headed down to the train station and attempted to purchase a preloaded card. The first thing that annoyed me was that there was a $5 charge to load the new card. Next, when I was about $12 into feeding the machine, a little bar popped up and blocked the slot so I couldn't put any more change in. I guess they don't want people filling up the machine with their loose coinage. Anyhow, when I canceled the transaction it returned all my money in the form of one dollar coins of various types. So, I started over, put the rest of my quarters into the machine, and cancelled that transaction too. Finally, I pruchased the card with all the dollar coins I had gotten in return for my quarters. The machine doesn't seem to care about the value of the coins — only their number.
