I Don't Know About Summers Anymore
My plan for today was to walk around and take photographs for a couple of hours before the heat got going in earnest. On my way home, I would stop by an ATM for cash and pick up a gyro1 and some beer. I'd eat a quick lunch, clean my apartment, and close out the day by listening to music over a couple of ales and possibly a pilsner.
So much for plans; after only an hour outside in today's 35ÂșC temperatures and 46% humidity, I was on the retreat back to my place. On the way, I managed to drop by the bank, though the detour was ill-advised, as I was sorely hurting on the last few blocks home. Both the gyro window and bottle shop were out of the question. The heat clings, suffocating every pore. There isn't much to breathe outside, either, aside from water, ozone, and car exhaust.2
I'm cooling off in the air conditioning now.3 I will nap before risking another trip outside to pick up beer. I don't think the gyro is happening today. South Street has some kind of festival going on. I can't deal with anything like a festival in this heat. At some point today, I should clean my messy apartment. That's still on the table, along with a clutter of mail that needs shredding.
Maybe later, I'll watch The Chronicles of Riddick. Today definitely has a Helion Prime feel to it.

It's easier to pay cash at the gyro window. ↩︎

This is not exactly fair to the cars; there are also lots of truck and bus fumes. ↩︎

A few days ago, I placed an order for a nice electric fan. I wanted to get in before the rush of people suddenly realizing summer is here and it's going to be a rough one. The odds are good that all summers will be rough from here on in. I plan to supplement the air conditioning with a mechanical breeze in an effort to reduce my electricity consumption. The fan was costly, so I can't imagine how long it will take to pay for itself in savings, but using less electricity is worthwhile in other ways, too. Many will gawk at the price I paid for a weird-looking stand fan, but I've adopted a firm buy-nice attitude after having been burned so often trying to be economical and winding up buying twice, thrice, or even more. ↩︎
