I recently had a lot of trouble installing Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon from a USB drive. The installation would fail with the following error message:

An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed

There's is an old bug report related to this problem here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/658865, HOWEVER nothing suggested therein helped me.

As it turns out, what happened in my case was that I first installed Ubuntu on the USB drive, but then later installed Mint on the same drive without reformatting. This seems to have caused the problem. Selecting the "format drive" option while running the Universal USB Installer (UUI) once more corrected the issue.

Good luck!
