My Computer Died

I haven't posted in a while. My computer died a few weeks ago. Something is wrong in the hardware. The machine shuts down without warning every few minutes. The geniuses at the computer store are asking for almost $1,500 to repair the liquid damage.[1] I suspect they have no plans to actually debug and fix the problem properly, but instead intend to replace the innards en masse with refurbished parts.

I wound up purchasing a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) instead. It was only slightly more than the repair would have cost. The MacBook is well underpowered for the money, but I knew that going into the deal. With this machine, it's all about form factor. The MacBook 12-inch is tiny and weighs next to nothing.[2] It's the grossly overpriced netbook of my dreams. Mostly.

Footnotes

  1. It does not have liquid damage. The problem likely stems from a defective sensor that's too much work for me to replace myself.
  2. It weighs 2.03 pounds (0.92 kg), to be exact.
